History
Braille International Inc. was formed in 1978 under its parent company, Triformation Systems, Inc.
It began as a test facility for the braille printers that Triformation Systems designed and manufactured.
In late 1979, the National Library Service for the Blind and Visually Handicapped (NLS) requested that this
test facility become a producer of braille books for NLS. In 1980, Triformation Systems decided to give this test
facility a name. The company adopted the name Triformation Braille Services, Inc. (TBS) but continued under the
corporate umbrella of Triformation Systems, Inc. In 1984, the two companies split and became two separate corporations.
In 1987, TBS became a not-for-profit (501c3) company and began operating under the guidance of a volunteer board of directors comprised of area professionals. In June of 1991, TBS changed its name to Braille International Inc.
